Seminar
Copenhagen, August 27-28 1999
It has become an important tradition among the Nordic bibliometricians and scientometricians to keep contact within the region, and to get together once a year for a week-end Workshop, which usually takes place by the end of August in one of the Nordic countries, following a scheduled turn. This Summer it was Denmark´s turn to host this traditional event, and the Centre for Informetric Studies in Copenhagen, the Royal School of Library and Information Science, had the responsibility to call for papers and to invite the Nordic colleagues to Copenhagen. With the support of NORDINFO, we could invite one of the leading European scientists of the field to give a key note speech: Dr. Wolfgang Glänzel, Chairman of RASCI (Research Association for Science Communication and Information, Germany). He has also several other duties in the international platform, such as, Secretary of ISSI (International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics), Editorial Advisor of the international journal Scientometrics, Senior researcher at Information Science & Scientometrics Research Unit of the Hungarian Academy of Science Library, and Member of the Hungarian Humboldt Association.
As usual, the number of participants was around 20,
most of them working with research evaluation. The very
positive development in the field is that the workshop
this year attracted several new, young researchers from
various fields. There were good quality papers coming
from university research environments as well as from the
application areas (research policy, research evaluation,
research management, innovation studies, etc.). The
presentations demonstrated a growing interest in using
bibliometric methods in research studies. It was obvious
that the young researchers are using these methods in a
creative way - not only in the fields of the social
sciences, but also in several other related disciplines.
See the list of papers presented below. A selection of
papers will be published in the international journal
Scientometrics during the next year.
The 5th Nordic Workshop in Bibliometrics is planned to
be held in Finland at VTT in Helsinki in the year 2000. For further
